Story
Emilia Perez follows four extraordinary women in Mexico, each in search of her own happiness
Cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an under-appreciated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Karla Sofia Gascon discusses the two years of preparation it took for this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film, and the two extremes of her own personality she had to portray as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard said he was inspired for the idea for the musical by a chapter in a novel about a drug lord who longs to change his identity.

Audiard’s direction, script, and atmospheric approaches are all well thought out
Audiard is a filmmaker who always surprises me with his works as he creates interesting stories that are very different from other films I’ve seen. The concept of a musical about Mexico, drug dealers, gender identity, and corruption is very strange and a bit confusing, but with Audiard’s direction and approach, it worked. The script explores the characters’ journeys and his inventive style really adds a lot to the setting.
Although some of the vocals and songs didn’t quite work, as a piece, it delivered
Many of the characters, while certainly not likeable people, at the same time, you still get involved as you watch them and observe who they are and their purposes. With good camera work, production, and soundtrack, all the performances are great, particularly Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón as they both gave outstanding performances. As a musical, the songwriting is pretty good as there are some really memorable songs that are still stuck in my head.
I appreciate that the film uses the themes of transgender identity and depth combined with the musical moments quite well!
The writing is good, but I have to admit that I wasn’t sold on all aspects as I found some aspects messy and a bit too melodramatic. Overall, this isn’t my favorite Jacques Audiard, but one thing is for sure, it’s something unique and memorable.
